BMB On Break

It’s time again for a little BMB R&R, especially with the market behaving as bizarrely as it’s been. Maybe if we stop watching it start to behave a little better…

Posting will be very light and variable over the course of this week, but we’ll put up an open thread each market day for our readers to comment on the day’s market activity or to post any interesting links they might run across.

Check the space below for whatever the latest might be during this ‘off’ time, and please visit the various sites in the ‘Links’ and ‘Regular Stops’ for up-to-date market news and analysis.

BMB will be back in full swing by next weekend.

Sector Scan

This week, BMB looks at the AMEX Sector SPDRs from a slightly longer term perspective. These are 2-year, weekly charts:

XLE chart On the upside, energy stocks continue their leadership, not having fallen below their 20-week moving average since November 2003.
XLU weekly chart Utilities continue to show strength.
XLI weekly chart Industrials still strong, although momentum may be beginning to slow somewhat.
XLV weekly chart On the downside, health care stocks are downright sick, threatening to break through support levels.
XLP weekly chart Consumer staples are also struggling, with no support nearby to hold them up.
XLK weekly chart Technology peaked in January, and it’s been all downhill since then.
