BMB On Break

It’s time again for a little BMB R&R, especially with the market behaving as bizarrely as it’s been. Maybe if we stop watching it start to behave a little better…

Posting will be very light and variable over the course of this week, but we’ll put up an open thread each market day for our readers to comment on the day’s market activity or to post any interesting links they might run across.

Check the space below for whatever the latest might be during this ‘off’ time, and please visit the various sites in the ‘Links’ and ‘Regular Stops’ for up-to-date market news and analysis.

BMB will be back in full swing by next weekend.

Weekend Sector Scan

Most of the sectors held their own this week, with the exception of last week’s winners. The energy and utility stocks got beaten up on the fall in oil prices and fears of higher interest rates. Health care stocks have begun to show some signs of life, and might actually not continue to go down forever.

XLK chart Technology stocks continue to make impressive gains off their lows, and remain quite extended from their moving averages.
XLY chart Consumer Discretionary stocks have slowed, but haven’t slid back.
XLE chart Energy stocks gave back all of their gains of last week, hurt by tumbling oil prices.
XLU chart Utilities pulled back, as BMB thought they might, but haven’t violated their trendline or moving average support.

Here’s what the numbers look like after this week’s “action”:

Sector Symbol 8 Week % Chg. 4 Week % Chg. 1 Week % Chg.
Technology XLK +10.6 +4.6 +2.5
Industrials XLI +8.9 +3.6 +1.2
Consumer Discretionary XLY +8.7 +1.9 -0.4
Basic Materials XLB +6.3 +3.6 -1.1
Utilities XLU +6.0 +0.5 -3.7
Consumer Staples XLP +5.6 +0.3 +0.3
Health Care XLV +4.4 +1.8 +2.3
Financials XLF +4.1 +2.0 +1.2
Energy XLE -0.6 +0.7 -4.4
