BMB On Break

It’s time again for a little BMB R&R, especially with the market behaving as bizarrely as it’s been. Maybe if we stop watching it start to behave a little better…

Posting will be very light and variable over the course of this week, but we’ll put up an open thread each market day for our readers to comment on the day’s market activity or to post any interesting links they might run across.

Check the space below for whatever the latest might be during this ‘off’ time, and please visit the various sites in the ‘Links’ and ‘Regular Stops’ for up-to-date market news and analysis.

BMB will be back in full swing by next weekend.

Weekend Sector Scan

XLE chart Energy stocks continue to outperform all other sectors by a wide margin. The XLE was up 3.5% on the week, while all other sectors gained less than a percent or worse. The chart’s getting a little ahead of itself here - if you’re already in, ride it as far as it will go, but if you’re looking to put money in, I’d be waiting for it to settle down and pull back a bit.

Sectors other than energy were split on the week, with Basic Materials (XLB) getting a little bump from the move up in gold&silver stocks. Here are the updated numbers:

Sector Symbol 8 Week % Chg. 4 Week % Chg. 1 Week % Chg.
Energy XLE +11.9 +10.9 +3.5
Utilities XLU +5.7 +5.6 0.0
Consumer Staples XLP +3.1 +1.5 -0.4
Basic Materials XLB +1.9 +3.0 +0.9
Financials XLF +1.8 +2.8 +0.5
Health Care XLV +0.7 +0.9 +0.4
Industrials XLI -1.1 +1.8 +0.6

The Paper Chase

Americans are recycling more paper than ever before — and China is buying it. Along with whatever other scrap they can get their hands on.
