BMB On Break

It’s time again for a little BMB R&R, especially with the market behaving as bizarrely as it’s been. Maybe if we stop watching it start to behave a little better…

Posting will be very light and variable over the course of this week, but we’ll put up an open thread each market day for our readers to comment on the day’s market activity or to post any interesting links they might run across.

Chart Chatter

With stocks having made a big move down and now bounced back up, it seems that there is almost no end to the opportunities available on the short side should the market falter and take another dive down. As BMB mentioned last week, when it comes to entire groups that are looking vulnerable, check out the REITs and the brokers. There are certainly ideas outside those areas as well. Here are a couple of charts that caught my eye, looking like big picture tops are in place, and bounces are moving back up into resistance.

Remember, these are observations and not trading advice. BMB holds no position in the stocks mentioned as of this writing.

What’s Hot, What’s Not

Notes on the latest moves in the industry groups:

Most of the groups have rather ominous looking charts, very similar to those of the major indices: a big move down on heavy volume, and a light volume bounce up. I don’t like the looks of those charts at all.
The groups that have held up the best are the utilities, some energies, and the metals.
Biotechs, disk drives, internets and the airlines are showing no signs of a bounce at all. Pretty ugly stuff.
